          Stage 2 Pre-reading                                              (6mins)

          Step 1 Warming up                                              (2mins)

          Chant together (song after a video made by the teacher)

          T: Good. Let’s have a vocabulary review first. Do you still remember the chant we’ve learned before?

                T: Now, do you get well-prepared?

             Ss: Yeah!

             T: Answer me: what is a taikonaut? It means an astronaut who comes from china.

             Ss: Excellent. Sit down, please. Today, we’re going to learn something about     Chinese taikonauts.

          Stage 3 While-reading                                           (18mins)  

           Step 1: Skimming (Get the main idea)                                 (3mins)

          (Purpose: To develop students' the reading skills of skimming: Get the main idea without reading every word by using effective strategies. 培養(yǎng)學(xué)生略讀的閱讀技巧:運(yùn)用有效的策略,在不讀每個(gè)字的情況下,抓住文章主要意義)

          Task 1:Match the subheadings with three parts.

          T: Look at this picture. Who is he?

          Ss: Yang Liwei.

          T: What’s his job?

          Ss: He is a taikonaut.

          T: That’s it! Here a piece of news about him.

          T: What’s this? Or what is this line of words. It’s the ... of the news.

          Ss: It’s the headline.

          T: Awesome. Actually it is in this piece of news that the word taikonaut comes out in the whole world, which reflects the admiration and appreciation for China's space technology from around the world. So proud of our country, aha?

          Ss: Wow.

          T: Take out you text book and focus on the article. How many parts it is divided into?

          Ss: 3.

          T: Good. Take out your handout and look at Task 1. It gives you 3 subheadings as well. Please match them. You’ll have 1 minute. Do you need to read every word?

          Ss: No.

          T: Why? Where will you pay special attention to for getting the main idea?

          Ss: The first or last sentence of each paragraph.

          T: Are you clear now?

          Ss: Yes.

          T: Let’s check. Perfect! Give him/her a big hand. Now, boy’s and girls, according to the photograph, the headline and some subheadings, can you infer what would talk about in this passage?

          Ss: Yes. We can..

          T: That is to say, for a piece of news, the headline, subheadings and photographs will help you get the general content of the article and save time. A good method for you to read news, right? Do you get it?

          Ss: Yes.

          T: Congratulations!

           Step 2: Scanning (Reading for details)                                (15mins)                   

          (Purpose: To develop students' reading skills of scanning: Let students find out specific information and know the basic elements of news’ introduction part by making a mind map. 培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的掃讀能力: 通過(guò)思維導(dǎo)圖,讓學(xué)生找出具體的細(xì)節(jié)信息,了解新聞導(dǎo)語(yǔ)部分的基本要素)

          Task 2: Read Para.1 carefully and make a mind map.                   (5mins)

               T: Actually, for a piece of news, do we have to read every paragraph to learn    what happened?

            Ss: Nope.

          TAs you’ve learned in Chinese class, can you tell me which paragraph in a    piece of news is the most important one?

          Ss: Para.1!

          T: Good memory! Because usually the first paragraph or the first sentence is the   part we call Introduction. Have you ever heard it?

          Ss: Yes, in Chinese class.

          T: Tell me: what elements an introduction part would include?

          SsWho, when, where, what, why, how.

          T: So smart of you! Now, you’ll have 5minutes to read Para.1 carefully and try   to make a mind map on your own according to this clue. Are you clear?

          Ss: Clear.  

          T: Who would like to come to the blackboard? You please. (Pick up one students   to write on the white board.) 

          ...T: Time’s up. Who dose this news talk about?

          Ss: Yang Liwei.

          T: Where did you find your answer? Please read out the sentence.

          Ss: China’s first taikonaut Lieutenant Colonel Yang Liwei.

          T: When did it happen?

          Ss: this morning (October 16th, 2003).

          T: You’re all right. Ok, please focus on the word “this”. Instead of “l(fā)ong long    ago”, this can tell us the news must be update or out of date?

          Ss: Update.

          T: Bingo. Because timeliness is one of news’ basic features.

          T: How about where?

          Ss: in Inner Mongolia, 300 kilometers northwest of Beijing.

          T: Tell me the specific number 300 and direction make the location more clear or   unclear?

          Ss: Clear.

          T: You’re all absolutely right. That is because accuracy is one of news’ basic    features.

          T: So what happened?

          Ss: Yang made 14 orbits of the earth and landed safely in Shenzhou V capsule.

          T: What dose orbit mean?

          Ss: It means...

          T: That’s all about Para.1. Can you infer how did Yang make it? By what?

          Ss: Rockets.

          T: Great! Why did he do it? May be to...

          Ss: To explore the universe. To make our Chinese taikong dream come true.

          T: You’re so marvelous. Let’s check his/her answer.

          T: He/she is all right. Right? Besides, I think his/her job much beautiful and    vivid than mine. Do you think so? I’ll give G.. 2 flowers. Congratulations! Give   a big hand to him/her. Other groups must keep trying. 

          Mid-Summary                          (1min)

          (Purpose: To help students to sort out and consolidate what they have learned in time階段性總結(jié): 幫助學(xué)生及時(shí)整理、鞏固所學(xué)知識(shí))

          T: Now, everybody tells me: what is this part?

          Ss: It’s the headline.

          T: How about this part?

          Ss: It’s the introduction.

          T: What elements it must include?

          Ss: who, what, when and where.

          T: Excellent! So, what is this?

          Task 3: Read the rest paragraphs and match the words with their speakers.   (4mins)

          (Purpose: To help students get a reading skill: to use keywords to quickly locate the answer area.訓(xùn)練閱讀技巧通過(guò)關(guān)鍵詞, 迅速定位答案所在區(qū)域)

          T: Actually we call it the body of the news. Here are some elements it could   include. Which one is covered in this article? Take out your handout and focus  on Task 3. Please read the rest paragraphs and try to match the words with their  speakers. 3minute, be quick. Clear?

          Ss: Clear.

          T: Do you need to read word after word?

          Ss: No.

          T: How can you get the answer quickly?

          Ss: Find out the names first and then match with their words.

          (Purpose: To help students get a reading skill: to use keywords to quickly locate the answer area.訓(xùn)練閱讀技巧通過(guò)關(guān)鍵詞, 迅速定位答案所在區(qū)域)

          T: Good for you. Maybe you can underline your evidence in the text directly.   Then I’ll ask where can you find them.

          T: Could you tell me which element it belongs to in the body part?

          (Purpose: To help students learn the features of the news. 掌握新聞的特點(diǎn))

          T: As you can see, the Para.4 is left. Let’s focus on it. Read it carefully and try to  finish Task 4. 2 minutes.

          T: It gives us some detailed facts about the news, right?

          Ss:Yes.

          T: How about Q2? Who would like to try?

          Task 5: Find out the basic structure of a piece of news.                    (2mins)

          (Purpose: To help students learn the basic structure of the news. 幫助學(xué)生了解新聞的基本結(jié)構(gòu))

          T: So, now you can tell me, which element dose this article include?

          Ss: Quotes and comments, detailed fact and background information.

          T: Good job. Please think about: what is the basic structure of a piece of news? Or which elements we can’t delete while writing news?

          Ss:Headline..

          T: Yes, the most important is the the headline and introduction. If we want to add some information in body part, maybe some quotes and comments are enough.

          T: Boys and girls close your eyes please. Can you still remember the basic structure of news?

          Ss: Yes.

          T: Tell me please.

          Ss: The headline, the introduction (4w) and maybe some quotes and comments.

          T: You all have good memories. So talented you are.

          Stage 4 Post-reading                                               (16mins)    

          Step 1: Shorten news according to the basic structure.                       (3mins)

          Task 6: Shorten the text into a brief one.

          (Purpose: To help students master and use the basic structure of the news. 幫助學(xué)生進(jìn)一步掌握新聞的基本結(jié)構(gòu)且能熟練運(yùn)用)

          T: As you all know the basic structure. Can you make this news shorter by deleting some unimportant part?

          Ss: Yes.

          T: Let’s have a try. You can write on your hand out Task 6 or just underline on your text book. 3 minutes.

          T: Time’s up. Who wanna share with us?

          T: Perfect pronunciation and marvelous work. Give him/her a big hand. I know most of you have done a good job. Here comes a possible version. Take a quick look and tell me. What’s this?

          Ss: The headline.

          T: How about this?

          Ss: The introduction.

          T: which elements it include?

          T: And how about this part?

          Ss: The body of the news.

          T: More specifically, it’s simplified from some quotes and comments.  Congratulations! Can you master the skill of making news shorter?

          Step 2: Role play.    (13mins)

          Task 7: Broadcast news in groups of 5.            (13mins)

          (Purpose: To help students summarize the general content of a piece of news properly according to the basic structure and speak in English fluently. 幫助學(xué)生運(yùn)用新聞的基本結(jié)構(gòu)準(zhǔn)確總結(jié)新聞的主要內(nèi)容,且能用英語(yǔ)流利地表達(dá)出來(lái))

          T: Great. Now there are three pieces of news for you to broadcast. First you need to shorten the news. Second, discuss how to broadcast and do some preparations for your performance. Work in groups of 5 and Group 10 would be the judges. This table is the standard. You’ll have 7minutes. Here we go. If you have any questions or need any help, please raise up your hands, and I’ll be there.

          T: The content is simple and clear and the performance is humorous. Applause please. I firmly believe all of you did a good job, however time is limited. Please seize the next chance. Group 10 please give us your result.

            Task 8: Thinking                                 (2mins)

           (Purpose:To help students learn good qualities from those taikonauts and to arouse the patriotism of the students, so as to make students work harder by doing well in some small things in daily life. 幫助學(xué)生從中國(guó)宇航員身上學(xué)習(xí)優(yōu)秀的品質(zhì),激發(fā)學(xué)生的愛(ài)國(guó)主義精神,通過(guò)做好日常生活中的一些小事情,為中華之崛起而更加努力讀書(shū))

          T: Look at this picture. Who is the man. The first man landed on the moon. He is an America astronaut and his name is Armstrong. He once said a famous saying, “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” We know US was the first country to send humans to the Moon. Who is he? It’s Wan Hu. Where does he come from?

          Ss: China.

          T: He is a Chinese ancient scholar from Ming Dynasty who not only dreamed of flying in the sky but also take some action. Can you use some adjectives to describe his qualities?

          Ss: Brave...

          T: He has the ambition to realize his dream. Yep, ambitious. He also have some passion for adventures. He is adventurous. Actually, he failed finally, but his spirit encourages all Chinese people for ages and under his influence, some nationalistic figures who are knowledgeable and tough work together. Although there are lots of failures and challenges along the way, they are always optimistic  and finally overcome all the difficulties. And then they make some achievements. The first Chinese man-made earth satellite comes out. So proud of country, aha?

          Ss: Yep!

          T: After that, we talented Chinese with a big taikong dream, insist on being united and industrious. Later, China's first manned space mission was launched. And up to now, Chang’e 3 becomes the first Chinese spacecraft to soft-land on the moon and our taikonauts can even deliver lectures in space. Talented, adventurous, industrious, knowledgeable, optimistic, nationalistic, ambitious, united, tough. It is these good qualities that make up of Chinese taikonauts. It is these good qualities that make our country better and better. As we all know “A strong youth makes a strong country.” So How about you guys?

          T: China's future will be shaped by you. Please keep this qualities in mind and push yourself move forward. You can begin with every little step. As Li Zhuoyue, one of your extraordinary senior school mates, once said. Every small step you are going to take can make a big difference.

          Stage 6 Self-reflection (教學(xué)反思)

          Overall impression:

          The objectives of this class are basically achieved. After the class, most students are able to read a piece of news efficiently using the photographs, headline and subheadings; they can for specific information while reading; they can tell the features and basic structure of news; finally, about the Post-reading Stage, most students can make a broadcast in groups using what we've learned.

          Students can be aware that prediction can help get the right information about a topic. And they can locate specific information by focusing on the first or last sentence and finding out the key words. They know how to broadcast a piece of news accurately and properly.  And some of them can even do a more imaginative job than I’ve imagined before the class. So proud of them. While they’re discussing, their cooperative spirit were built up by pair work and group work. I’m happy that their motivation and interest in learning English have been strengthened. And they have become more confident while speaking in English.

          From this class, studentspatriotism has been stimulated through the understanding of China's space development process. And they knew what a taikonaut is and what good qualities they have. Looking forward to their future progress.

          In this class, much time of dealing with new words and expressions are saved by a simple and interesting chant, and a lot of time are spent in guiding students to experience and think about the topic.

          Advantages:

          1. The warm-up chant activity is very novel and can greatly stimulate students' learning enthusiasm, so that students can get into the role as soon as possible. And this part better review the vocabulary we’ve learned last class, and inspire students to think about the topic of this class. It makes the classroom form diversified and helps the student better master the unit key vocabulary.

          2. Setting the learning objectives is a good method for students learning. With the theory of starting with the end, learning with learning objectives helps students have more control over the learning process. And in the final Self-valuation Stage, students can timely monitor their own learning situation.

          3. Timely summary is helpful. Mid-summary can help students timely sort out and consolidate what they have learned; Final-Summary at the end of class can help students review the knowledge of this lesson while it is still clear, and help students develop the habit of summarizing and making an overall reflection on the learning situation of this lesson based on the learning objectives.

          4. The atmosphere of the class was pretty active, most of the students were involved in it and had a great time, which achieved the most important teaching objectives.

          5. After learning, students could have a positive attitude towards the difficulties they will meet in future learning process and have much passion and love for our motherland.

          Disadvantages:

          The instruction words can be much more clear and simple which is the weakness of mine. The cultivation of students’ reading strategies is not accomplished overnight, which needs to be further strengthened.
